  Red Faction: Guerrilla Hands-on

First Person shooter September 1, 2009 - Three months ago, THQ and Volition released Red Faction: Guerrilla on the consoles. A sequel to 2001's shooter set on Mars, Guerrilla cast players as a new member of the re-created Red Faction movement as they attempted to liberate the planet from the Earth Defense Force. Featuring a ton of destruction in the single player campaign, engaging multiplayer modes and a striking visual presentation of structures being pulverized, Guerrilla was an impressive title and was lauded for its "free-form demolition and unpretentious entertainment" by our own Charles Onyett. While console owners have been saving Mars for a while now, PC owners will get their chance to make a mark on the Red Planet in a few weeks, as THQ is bringing Guerrilla to computers everywhere. Recently, I had a chance to get some hands-on time with the game to see exactly what new features have been included.

For those of you who aren't aware of the basic plot of Guerrilla, here's a quick summary: you play as Alec Mason, a newcomer to Mars who discovers that the peacekeeping force on the planet has instituted martial law and revoked all rights. After an incident that involves his brother, Alec picks up a sledgehammer and joins the Red Faction, a ragtag group of insurgent fighters looking to toss the Earth Defense Force off the planet once and for all. Unlike the console versions of Guerrilla, the PC version will also receive the recently released Demons of the Badlands downloadable content, which takes place three years before the events of Guerrilla. Demons features Samanya, the female lead of Guerrilla, as the playable character as she and the Marauders fight against the EDF, providing additional information on who the Marauders are and their history on Mars (which will stand out to Red Faction fans). The Demons content is instantly accessible within the PC version, so you can immediately play the prologue of the story before you play through the full campaign.
